Bundelkhand - History etched in stone

Lying across the states of Madhya Pradesh & Uttar Pradesh, the culturally rich region of Bundelkhand is spread from the historic Jhansi district till the ancient Kalinjar fort. Formed by the Chandela dynasty several centuries ago and later ruled by the Bundela dynasty, this region is steeped in history & heritage but still not much explored.

Jhansi Fort

Once the stronghold of Bundela kings and later ruled by the Peshwas, the most famous historic personality to rule here was Queen Manikarnika, popularly called "Jahnsi Ki Rani Lakshmi Bai".  Spread over 15 acres, this colossal structure with thick walls also houses an archaeological museum now. A sure stop over for history buffs when starting the Bundelkhand journey from Jhansi.

Orchha

Located near Jhansi, this quaint town has several tourist attractions and worth a night halt. From a visit to the captivating Orchha fort to a jungle safari at Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary to river rafting & boating in the Betwa river,  Orchha offers something unique for every traveler.

Khajuraho Temples

The most popular spot in any trip to this region, the town of Khajuraho has several ancient temples with stunning, intricately carved art depicting spirituality, royalty, history and erotica. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temples of Khajuraho were once a place of education and meditation in ancient times. On a visit to these temples, you can also take a audio guided tour. The sound & light show every evening with the temples as backdrop is mesmerizing & a must have on the itinerary. 

Panna National Park

Spread over 540 sq. kms in Chhatarpur and Panna districts near Khajuraho, once considered among the best managed parks, Panna lost all its tigers by 2009. The subsequent relocation and breeding efforts were successful and this national park is home to almost 50 tigers today. Located at the end of Vindhya hill range after which, the gangetic plains begin, this dry deciduous forest has vast plateaus and gorges dotted by enchanting waterfalls. The river Ken, which flows through the park has a healthy population of ghariyal crocodile.

Kalinjar Fort

Located near the MP - UP border, Kalinjar holds a unshakable spot in Indian history. Built by Chandela rulers around 800 A.D., this fort has witness many ancient & medieval battles and is said to be the spot where the invasion of the Ghazni rulers was stopped. Perched atop a hill, the fort has several spots worth visiting like Neelkanth Mahadev temple, Buddha - Buddi Tal, Patal Ganga, Pandava Kund and Sher Shah Suri's tomb. 

Brihaspati Kund Waterfall

Known as the Niagara Falls of India, this 400 ft waterfall is located in the Pahari Khera village near between Panna & Kalinjar fort. From the road trip into the valley to a dip in the pools of the waterfall, this half day journey is a mesmerizing one, especially after the monsoon.
